If you own your own business you understand the importance of professionalism. You are judged by your appearance as well as your integrity. If you have a website it should demonstrate that your business is ethical, knowledgeable and credible. The idea is to build a sense of trust with your potential customers.
The same is true of a brick and mortar business. But in that case you have the added advantage of being able to meet and greet your visitor in addition to ‘showing them your stuff’. A physical building also means that you have some choice in the location of your business. Because you decide where your business will be, you know where your competition is.
But even the person that stores merchandise in his garage or basement to sell on Craigslist or eBay is in reality, a business person. And as such, must represent himself as a professional. In many ways this person is doing the same things as the other business owners. He has products to sell, he must do advertising, and he must keep track of sales, etc.
Trade shows offer various types of businesses an opportunity to become known in the community. Typically, the trade show is held in a large community building and a fee, or booth rental is charged to each business for the event. The businesses will then set up their displays. Some will have sweepstakes or contests as a way to collect names and addresses of visitors to their booth. Trade shows are generally not for the purpose of making sales, but more for making contacts and promoting. Of course, the hope is that sales will come from the efforts.
If you’ve ever attended a trade show then you know that some booths are more popular than others. Actually, there are some things the business owner can do to make his booth more attractive. Start by having friendly people working, and offer some small token for each visitor. This can range from an ink pen to a calendar, or anything in between. The savvy business person will also display catalogs and/or magazines that describe the company’s products and services. In fact, consider presenting the giveaway items as an irresistible packaged set.
The point is that if the person stops at the booth at all, they have expressed an interest in the product or service. By having a catalog or magazine to take home and leisurely look over, they are very likely to make a purchase. Trade shows can be very cost effective marketing tactics, especially if the booth rental is not too pricey and the business owner can get the printing done at an affordable rate.
